dear Mercer,
I never left a thought that these May Memoranda had anything to say to the offences with which I was charged, viz. the usurpation of the government!! and the destruction of the books and newspapers to screen... Caldwell, the first was altogether ridiculous; the second has been investigated by the Caldwell Commissioners and their decision completely cleared me. If the verdict of the Jury in the Queen v. Tarrant is to be supposed to affirm what the report of the Commission negatived - I think the latter had the best...
